In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, there was a massive rush online. Companies with prophetic vision understood that the Internet was the future; consequently, they scrambled to build an online presence and stake their claim on the World Wide Web. Today, everyone has a website. If a company has yet to establish an online presence, it truly is living in the modern version of the dark ages. The Internet is no longer the future of business…It is the present.

The mad rush to gain an online presence that has characterized business over the last decade, however, is happening again. But instead of fighting to gain an online presence, early adopters are now realizing that the Internet is shifting to mobile. Therefore, the place for businesses to focus right now is on developing a strong mobile presence.

The Statistics

Garnter Research predicts that by 2013, more people will use mobile devices than PCs to get online. Gartner also estimates that global mobile payment transaction values will surpass $171.5 billion in 2012. This is a staggering 61.9 percent increase from the $105 billion in 2011. But the really staggering news is that this rate of growth is expected to not only continue, but to actually increase.

KPMG estimates that global mobile transactions will grow at 97 percent per year over the next three years, reaching an astounding $750 billion by 2015. Juniper Research estimates that five years from now, by 2017, mobile payments will be around $1.3 trillion.

Mobile is not a fad. It is the future of web access. As stated earlier, Gartner already expects mobile devices to be the most popular access point 2013. What does this all mean for the small to medium sized business owner? Now is the time to get serious about developing a strong mobile presence.

Take Your Website Mobile

If you have a website currently, then, of course, that website can be viewed on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet. The problem is not in access, but in readability and user-interface. Reading a standard website on a mobile device is not a fun experience. The words are typically very, very small, and navigation is often clumsy and not fluid. This makes customer conversion very difficult.

Thus, it is essential to make sure that one’s website is optimized for mobile viewing. If you are currently running a more advanced template website, such as Wordpress, there is often a mobile plugin that easily optimizes your website for viewers. However, if this is not an option with your current site, it may be a great time to upgrade your website in order to take advantage of this mobile explosion. Develop A Clean Checkout Process

Once the website is optimized for viewing and navigation, make sure the checkout process is seamless. The last thing you want is a beautifully designed website with a strong call to action, but then a loss of the customer during the checkout process due to a confusing layout.
